On November 20, the UN Security Council convened a closed-door meeting to discuss the situation in Myanmar. The meeting was attended by the UN Secretary-Generalโ€™s Special Envoy for Myanmar, ASEANโ€™s Special Envoy, Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the UN U Kyaw Moe Tun, and representatives from Security Council member states.

Following the meeting, during a media stakeout, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun urged UN member states and the international community to immediately halt the flow of arms, dual-use items, jet fuel, and financial support to Myanmarโ€™s military junta. He also expressed concerns over the juntaโ€™s plans to hold sham elections, emphasizing that the military lacks both legal and moral authority to conduct credible elections. He reiterated that any elections organized by the junta would not be free, fair, or inclusive.

Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun called on the Security Council member states to act in unity and from a humanitarian perspective to create hope for the people of Myanmar. He stressed that a unified response would effectively put an end to the juntaโ€™s crimes.

He also voiced deep concern over the lack of information regarding the current condition of State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, including her health and safety.

Regarding political dialogue, Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun reaffirmed the National League for Democracyโ€™s (NLD) openness to negotiations and highlighted that they had never refused to engage in discussions. He emphasized the importance of avoiding a repeat of past conditions, as witnessed in 2010 and 2015, and stressed the need for the military to withdraw completely from politics.
