10 Killed, 15 Injured as Coup Army Attacks Villages in Monywa, Sagaing Region

At least 10 people were killed and 15 others injured when the coup army indiscriminately fired on villages in Monywa, a revolutionary stronghold in upper Myanmar, on August 13, 2024. Monywa, known as a stronghold of armed resistance and popular uprisings against the military regime, has been frequently bombarded by the coup army. It is one of the most heavily attacked cities in the region, often targeted with large weapons.

On the afternoon of August 13th, the coup army stationed in Ma-U village, Monywa Township, opened fire on the outskirts of Hmanyogone and Nyaungphyupin villages, located about 6 miles away, without provocation. The attack resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians and left 15 others injured. The heavy artillery fire also caused significant damage to five nearby villages: Htanaungdaw, Hmanyogone, Nagadin, Ledaw, and Nyaungphyupin. As these villages are located near the coup army's positions, many residents have fled, fearing further violence. The displaced villagers are now in urgent need of food and other assistance, prompting local defense forces and aid groups to mobilize support.
