The National Unity Government (NUG) has appealed to neighboring countries to refrain from returning Myanmar refugees to the brutal military regime.

In a press briefing on November 12, U Nay Phone Latt, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, stated, โ€œWe have heard that Myanmarโ€™s military leader Min Aung Hlaing requested information on Myanmar nationals in Thailand during his meeting with the Thai Prime Minister in China. This request is based on good intentions. Refugees sent back to the military regime face imprisonment and forced conscription and are used as human shields on the frontlines. Therefore, we appeal to neighboring countries to consider the humanitarian perspective and refrain from handing over refugees to the military junta. Instead, we ask for all possible assistance to protect and support them.โ€

From June 5 to September 19, 2024, Thailand, under a 120-day operation, arrested 256,213 migrant workers from Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and other countries, with over 100,000 of them being Myanmar nationals.โฉ
