The UN Security Council is set to convene a private meeting today, November 20, 2024, to address the situation in Myanmar.
During the meeting, the UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar, Julie Bishop, and the Special Envoy of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Chair on Myanmar, Alounkeo Kittikhoun, are expected to provide briefings. This will mark the first time Bishop addresses the Council in her role as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar.
Assuming the position in April, Bishop previously shared in October that she had met with Myanmar’s junta leader in Naypyidaw and had engaged with civil society groups and revolutionary organizations, including the National Unity Government (NUG). The meeting has been arranged by the UK, which is also serving as the Council’s president this month.
