Many Myanmar citizens, including the Rohingya, have been forced to flee their homes due to the military council's brutal airstrikes, arbitrary arrests, violence, and forced military conscriptions. Many have sought refuge in remote areas or neighboring and regional countries.
Refugees in these countries face numerous security challenges and uncertainties, including resettlement opportunities.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun noted that while there are efforts to secure international protection, many refugees are still waiting for responses from the UNHCR. They remain traumatized and feel helpless.
The ambassador posed a question to the High Commissioner for Refugees, asking what messages of support and encouragement could be provided to the displaced Myanmar people trapped in neighboring countries, particularly in terms of security, health, and the future of their children.
In Myanmar, the illegal military coup has led to widespread human rights violations, war crimes, and crimes against humanity targeting civilians. UNHCR has expressed concern over the continuing refugee crisis resulting from these atrocities and indiscriminate attacks. This situation is well-reflected in the report.
Most of the refugees, who come from various social backgrounds, are currently in third countries under political asylum and temporary protection arrangements.
The ambassador expressed gratitude to the governments and people of host countries for their assistance to those in distress and emphasized the need for continuous support and care. He also urged that efforts be made to ensure that refugees receive the necessary assistance.
Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun stressed that the solution lies in ending the military dictatorship and the unjust military coup in Myanmar, as well as building a federal democratic union.
During the dialogue with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at the Third Committee meeting of the 79th United Nations General Assembly on November 6, the ambassador and Permanent Representative of Myanmar to the United Nations made the above points.
