Bangladesh Increases Border Security Amid Myanmar Conflict

Bangladesh has strengthened its border security due to ongoing conflicts between the Arakan Army (AA) and the Myanmar military in Rakhine State, which have led to an influx of approximately 18,000 Rohingya refugees crossing into Bangladesh in recent months. Bangladeshi officials disclose enhanced surveillance along the border to monitor the situation closely.

Although security has been tightened along the border, monitoring the 271-kilometer-long Myanmar-Bangladesh border remains challenging, especially in areas requiring collaboration with Myanmar authorities, reports Reuters, citing an anonymous Bangladeshi official.

"Thousands of Rohingya have fled to Bangladesh, and many are waiting to cross. The situation is dire," an anonymous foreign ministry official told Reuters.

This situation adds to the strain, as Bangladesh is already hosting around one million Rohingya refugees in camps within the Cox’s Bazar district, following the Myanmar military’s clearance operations in 2017. Earlier, Bangladeshi has stated that the country cannot accommodate further refugee influxes. However, the number of new arrivals has already doubled earlier estimates from the start of this month.
