The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced plans to assist two million vulnerable individuals in Myanmar by 2025. This effort comes as Myanmar faces a severe humanitarian crisis, with 13.3 million peopleโ€”about one-quarter of the populationโ€”experiencing food insecurity and nearly 3.5 million displaced due to conflict.

Michael Dunford, the newly appointed WFP Representative and Country Director for Myanmar, will lead this initiative. WFP emphasized that Dunfordโ€™s appointment comes at a crucial time, as the organization rolls out an integrated program focusing on emergency relief, nutritional support, and resilience-building, working in close partnership with local communities and organizations.

Dunford, an Australian national, brings nearly 25 years of experience with WFP. He has held key roles, including Regional Director for Eastern Africa, Country Representative in Tanzania, and Deputy Country Director in Uganda, Bangladesh, and North Korea, and was WFPโ€™s Emergency Coordinator during the Rohingya refugee crisis in Coxโ€™s Bazar in 2017.
