NUG Silent on Reports of Invitation to Indian Constitution and Federalism Conference

The National Unity Government (NUG) did not comment on reports that it was invited to the "Constitution and Federalism" discussion hosted by the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), which includes India's External Affairs Minister.

Reuters reported that the Arakan Army (AA) from Rakhine, the Chin National Front (CNF), the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), and the NUG have been invited to a conference in New Delhi on "Constitution and Federalism," scheduled for mid-November. The NUG has neither confirmed nor denied the report.

The Indian government is said to have invited ethnic armed groups from the Chin, Rakhine, and Kachin states, as well as the NUG. The ICWA, which is funded by the Government of India, will host the conference. Reuters further reported that the matter has been kept under wraps.

The ICWA includes External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who, in June, expressed concerns about instability along the border and the risks it poses to India's projects in Myanmar. Salai Shwe Khar, Vice Chairman of the Chin National Front, said, "We will send our representatives. I think this is the first time India is formally engaging. It's a very positive approach," he told Reuters.

There has been no official response from revolutionary groups such as the AA, KIA, and NUG regarding their participation in the Indian government's talks in New Delhi. India, which shares a western border with Myanmar, has committed $400 million to the Kaladan port and highway project, along with an additional $250 million for another road project that will connect India’s northeastern states with Thailand.
