Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Lestari Priansari Marsudi said that Indonesia, as the chairman of ASEAN, is still trying to access the political crisis in Myanmar.
She said that Indonesia is working hard every week to bring about discussions and negotiations that will cover all stakeholders in Myanmar's political sector and is trying to bridge differences of opinion.
As the chairman of ASEAN, Indonesia is working as widely as possible to engage in discussions with both sides. Marsudi said that she is trying to bridge the differences between the views while listening to the voices of both sides.
At the press conference after the meeting with the President Joko Widodo at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta for the ASEAN Conference, when reporters asked about Indonesia's actions regarding the Myanmar issue, Masudi gave this answer.
He said that even though resolving the Myanmar issue is not an easy matter, as the chairman of ASEAN, Indonesia is working full-time to build bridges, aka connections in between.
The Indonesian government also met and had a discussion with one of the leading forces in the revolutionary movement against the military junta, the National Unity Government (NUG), in addition to the ethnic armed forces.
Marsudi said that the 5 common consensuses proposed by ASEAN regarding Myanmar will continue to be discussed at the ASEAN meeting throughout.
The ASEAN summit will be held on May 10th and 11th in Labuan Bajo in the East Nusa Tenggara region, and the Indonesian government has already started preparations on that matter. In the previous ASEAN summit meetings, it was decided not to allow the political representatives of Myanmar to attend in the situation where political crises could not be resolved.
