The United States said that they supports again ASEAN's principle of not allowing the leaders Myanmar's military council to attend the meetings of ASEAN leaders and foreign ministers.
ASEAN has decided to allow only one person who does not represent Myanmar politically to attend ASEAN meetings.
The Deputy Assistant Foreign Minister of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said this at a press conference while the US Secretary of State was there to attend the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting and related meetings to be held in Laos tomorrow, July 24th, 2024.
"Our commitment is to continue pressuring Myanmar's military leaders to be accountable. We believe that anyone who represents Myanmar at the ASEAN meeting should be kept at the level of a person who has not taken a political position,'' Daniel J. Chris Benbring, Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the Department of State, said at a press conference.
He also said that a representative from the Myanmar Military Council will attend the ASEAN meetings in Laos, and he is the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The ASEAN Foreign Ministers' meeting held last January in Luang Prabang, Laos, the current chair of ASEAN, was attended by the Permanent Secretary of the Military Council's Foreign Affairs Department, Daw Mar Lar Than Htike.
