On September 13, 2024, the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), along with the Danu People's Liberation Army (DPLA) and People’s Defense Forces (PDF), successfully seized the headquarters of 902nd Artillery Operation Command (AOC/Ma-Sa-Kha 902) and 354th Artillery Battalion, located in Taung Hkam village, Naungcho Township, Northern Shan State.
As a result of this seizure, it has become easier for resistance forces to approach Pyin Oo Lwin, home to military academies, from the Naungcho and Taung Hkam directions. The junta troops, retreating from AOC-902, reportedly regrouped near Yatsauk Township.
In an attempt to prevent the fall of its Artillery Operation Command Headquarters, the junta dispatched a strategic commander from its Yangon Regional Military Command and launched intense resistance, including airstrikes and long-range artillery support. However, they were ultimately defeated. Sources from the front lines indicate that the military has now ordered a counteroffensive in Yatsauk.
Military analysts say that the loss of the Taung Kham Artillery Operation Command headquarters for the military junta signifies a major shift in favor of the resistance forces in the military dynamics of Northern and Southern Shan State, with more successes expected.
The TNLA and allied forces began their offensive on Taung Hkam on August 10, 2024, and secured the area after over a month of fighting.
